Mo's mom visited Hawaii January 26-February 9, 2006. On February 6, Mo and her mom flew to Maui for a 30 hour visit. Neither of us had been to Maui before (I've lived here for almost 6 years, and this was mom's 6th visit to Hawaii - her first to another island).
After getting our rental car and checking into our hotel, we drove up Haleakala, which rises to 10,023 feet above sea level. We started down the mountain just before sunset, and then headed for the hotel. We stopped and had dinner at Bada Bing in Kihei, which was just a block from our hotel, the Maui Coast.
The next morning, we headed off to Lahaina. We stopped a couple of times on the way to check for whales. We spent a couple hours in Lahaina, seeing the large banyan tree, and exploring. We stumbled across Cold Stone Creamery, so we decided to have breakfast, before heading back to the car.
On the way to Maalaea, we stopped again to see some whales. They were too far offshore for us to get a good view of them, but we could see parts of them in the distance.
In Maalaea, we went to the Maui Ocean Center. All of the marine life at the center has been collected from within 10 miles of the center - kinda scary if you think about it! LOL! After touring around there (me with my Kamaaina discount, mom with her senior citizen's) for a while, we grabbed some food at the Blue Marlin. Then it was back to the airport, to return to Honolulu!
